New research suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
